[Live Project] Day 30, Sketching, Model making & client meeting

The Hemingfield Colliery Project

Today was another really worthwhile day for the team!  Dave and Olivia went back to Elsecar to meet with one of our clients Christine.  During the meeting the guys ran through the event at the weekend and our ideas going forward.  It was a really positive session and we now have even more ideas on what we can deliver at the end of the project.

Back in Sheffield the rest of the team carried on with all the main tasks.

We produced a rough matrix to help us organised our ideas into phases of the project & the scale of the intervention.  We will use this matrix as a basis from which to structure our drawings/documents.

We have also begun work on even more models!  These are being made at a larger scale so that we can add more detail into them about our specific architectural ambitions.

[Live Project] Day 29, Starting on our deliverables & developing our initial designs.

The Hemingfield Colliery Project

We have now reorganised the team loosely into a document team, a model team, a video team and a design team.

The design team have been working on consolidating all of our research and applying what we have learnt from the community.  A lot of our ideas revolve around creating a phased strategy to redevelop the site as and when it becomes possible.

The document team have begun work on our final document, which will be handed over to our clients at the end of our involvement in the project.  We aim to make this document as useful and informative as possible, so that it can be used throughout the future of the project.

This document will outline our research and processes of development, leading on to our ideas (both strategic and architectural).  We will also be developing our physical models so that they can be used  in the long term to help explain the scheme.

Monday was another good day in the studios.  In the morning the whole team met to discuss the weekend; we were all really happy with how the event had gone!

We also spent the morning looking into our feedback from the weekend event, there are a lot of great ideas which we would like to include into the scheme if we can.

We also discussed our next steps, planning out our final documents/products to give to the clients at the end of our involvement.  We also planned out our final presentation (to our clients and the architecture school) which will take place next Friday, 7th November.

The guys had a great day, meeting with visitors as well as the railway volunteers.  They spent the day filming their discussions with the people they met, as well as the locomotives themselves.  These interviews will be included within a short film which we will present as part of our final package of work.

The Future of Hemingfield Colliery – SSoA Live Project Community Engagement Event

On Saturday 25th a team of students from the Sheffield School of Architecture hosted a community engagement event at Elsecar Heritage Centre.

Presenting an impressive array of interactive mapping, scale models, colourful history boards and striking sketch proposals, the Live Project team were active throughout the day from 11am to 4pm to explain and discuss their work so far, and to invite feedback from members of the local community and visitors alike as to the future development of the Hemingfield Colliery site. Outdoors and, when the weather turned, inside the centre, the group guided visitors around a series of displays, including:-

[Live Project] Day 26, The community engagement event, Elsecar Heritage Centre

The Hemingfield Colliery Project

Yesterday was a really great day.
We set up just outside the visitors centre at the Elsecar Heritage Centre in the morning and had a really good turn out of people coming to check out what we have been up to. We had to move inside in the afternoon thanks to the rain but that also worked out really well.

During the day we met some really interesting people from both nearby and further afield, all of whom had some great thoughts on the site and the area as a whole.  We had some great ideas from all the people we met, and it was great to see so much enthusiasm for this historic site.

Several of us also got the chance to head over to the heritage railway where we met some of the steam team and also got to have a look around at all their very…

[Live Project] Day 23, Sketching and modelling

The Hemingfield Colliery Project

It was another productive day here in the arts tower!

The 1:100 scale model is really coming along well, and is a pretty substantial size too.  The team will be working on finishing the landscape and making the buildings tomorrow, then it should be done!

[Live Project] Day 22, Presentation work and more model making

The Hemingfield Colliery Project

Another productive day here in the arts tower.

The history team have spent the last few days refining all their information into a series of documents, including some flash cards (below).  Each of these contains a potted history of various places in and around Elsecar and Hemingfield.

The model team are getting towards a finished product, and have worked their way through half the glue on campus!
