Earlier this year, FoHC volunteer, Mitchell Sutherland wrote a poem about the colliery whilst completing his studies at The Sheffield College.

Now that he has completed his studies, we are proud to be able to share this work with our followers on social media!
Hemingfield’s Story.
In the heart of South Yorkshire, where echoes linger,
Stands Hemingfield Colliery, a testament to vigour.
A coal-stained tale, written in the earth,
Where industry and sweat defined all its worth.
Beneath the Yorkshire soil, a silent song,
Hemingfield’s legacy, resilient and strong.
Men and boys, toiling underground,
The symphony of pickaxes, a constant sound.
Beam by beam, the winding gear stands tall,
A sentinel of labour, amidst the miners’ call.
In the blackened corridors, where darkness dwells,
Hemingfield’s story, the coal miner tells.
Through the seams of time, the pit head framed,
A tableau of struggle, of a life unclaimed.
Miner’s lamps flicker, like stars in the night,
Guiding hands to the coal’s stubborn fight.
In the whispers of the wind, the slag heap sighs,
Where memories linger, under Yorkshire skies.
Hemingfield’s colliers, faces lined with toil,
Unearthed the lifeblood of the Yorkshire soil.
Yet, shadows give way to the sun’s embrace,
As the colliery stands, a solemn space.
A heritage preserved, a living ghost,
Hemingfield Colliery, the memories boast.
Bricks weathered by time, tell tales untold,
Of hardship and camaraderie, brave and bold.
In the quiet Dearne Valley, where the brook flows,
Hemingfield’s story, in Yorkshire, it glows.
In 2014, the site saved with grace,
A fellowship formed by a shared fate.
Friends of Hemingfield, steadfast and true,
In the heart of coal country, where dreams once grew.
So here’s to the Friends of Hemingfield’s lore,
Keepers of history, forevermore.
In the heart of Yorkshire, Hemingfield’s name,
An ode to resilience, an enduring flame.
